UCLA COURSE ON CREATIVE CODING WITH p5.js OPENS ON KADENZE

This Kadenze course is the first UCLA Arts course to ever be offered as a MOOC

Royce Hall - UCLAValencia, CA – November 4th, 2015 –Introduction to Programming for the Visual Arts with p5.js” is now open on Kadenze. This course aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of writing code within the context of the visual arts. Since the advent of personal computing, creative software solutions have been utilized by artists all over the world to make their work. With “Introduction to Programming” from UCLA Arts, students will learn how to build and effectively use the tools they need to create their own interactive works of digital art.

“This class brings together over a decade of experience teaching coding to designers and artists at UCLA,” says Casey Reas (the course co-instructor and co-founder of the Processing Foundation ) “It’s a new kind of class where coding basics are introduced within the context of the visual arts. We’re thrilled to share it with a wider audience.”

The instructors for the course, Chandler McWilliams, Casey Reas, and Lauren McCarthy are not only experts in their fields, but they are distinguished educators and artists whose artistic works have been featured in galleries and publications around the world.

“Kadenze is proud to bring this amazing creative visual-arts programming course to the world,” says Perry Cook (Vice President and co-founder of Kadenze). “A student would be fortunate to take a course like this from any single instructor on this team. But in this UCLA course on Kadenze, students can learn from all three.”

Interested students can watch the 11 sessions worth of lecture videos and participate in the course discussion forums free of charge on Kadenze.com. Those students who are interested in submitting assignments, receiving feedback, and utilizing Kadenze’s portfolio feature to showcase their creations on Kadenze or across social media can sign up for Kadenze Premium Membership (a $7/month subscription service). Premium members who pass the course also receive a verified Certificate of Accomplishment which can be publicly viewed online as proof of the work they’ve done.

“My hope is that through this class we will be able to teach coding in a creative context to more people,” says Lauren McCarthy. “Particularly those that might not have access to classes like these in typical education settings.”

This is an introductory level course, so whether students are encountering this work for the very first time or simply looking for a refresher, this course will provide the necessary foundations for working with computer code in an artistic setting.

“Students learning p5. are learning much more than just how to ‘code’,” says Jordan Hochenbaum (VP of Engineering and VP of Operations at Kadenze). “They are learning how to program for the web in one of the most widely used languages of our time, JavaScript, using a cutting edge new library (p5.js) for creating digital art. It’s arts centered and that makes it truly unique.”

Students can learn more about the course and sign up on Kadenze.com. To stay up to date on all new course announcements, ‘like’ Kadenze on Facebook or follow @KadenzeOfficial on Twitter.
