KADENZE LAUNCHES ONLINE JAMMING COURSE FROM STANFORD

New Stanford course to teach students how to play music over the internet with zero latency issues

Valencia, CA – November 3rd, 2015 – Kadenze launches Online Jamming and Concert Technology today. Created in partnership with Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), this course aims to teach students how to create low-latency online networks for use in live performance. Designed in collaboration with CCRMA Director, Chris Chafe, this course was filmed in-house at Kadenze HQ and was purpose-built for online delivery.

“We’re excited to offer this course on Kadenze,” says Chafe. “This is a course that—by its very nature—should be done online. In fact, it doesn’t really work in the traditional classroom setting.”

The 5 session course teaches students the skills and theory necessary to utilize an open source program called JACKTRIP. By the end of instruction students will have the skills to create custom networks that overcome the latency issues which make programs like Skype and Facetime poor solutions for network-based live performance. All interested students will be able to watch the course lecture videos and participate in forum discussions free of charge. However, Kadenze Premium Members (a $7/month subscription service) will be able to play music with students from around the world over networks that they themselves create.

“I am interested in teaching people to use networks for music,” says Lawrence Fyfe (the course TA). “But I have a wide scope about what that means. My professional practice concerns everything from people sitting next to each other making music together on two separate computers, people making music together on opposite sides of the room, on opposite sides of a building, a country, or even the world. I believe that people should be able to make music in all those situations.”

Upon the successful completion of the course, Kadenze Premium students will receive a verified (and shareable) Certificate of Accomplishment, which can be used on resumes, job applications, or shared across social media.

“Chris has dedicated his life to this technology.” Says Ajay Kapur (President and CEO of Kadenze).  “It seems like the surge in the MOOC movement is perfect timing for students all over the world to connect with each other and jam using all the tools which Chris has been building over the past 20 years.”
