Yesterday, we launched Graphic Design History: an Introduction, our first graphic design course from Maryland Institute College of Art.
This graphic design course is taught by MICA’s Ellen Lupton, Director of the Graphic Design MFA program, as well as Brockett Horne, chair of Graphic Design. They’ll teach graphic design all the way up to the modern day, and all the way back to the earliest design tool: the alphabet.
Think about cuneiform, right? Go back to the Sumerians. You can think about this system, the tool, it’s wedge-shaped, mimicking the same shape, always the same. Over thousands of years. That’s like a machine—it’s in your brain.
In seven sessions, you’ll leave this course with a deep understanding and skill in typography and graphic design. You’ll also learn a variety of design styles, historical and modern. The course just started, so jump in.
Students can audit this graphic design course completely free of charge, with access to the session videos, resources, and forums.
For a more hands-on approach, sign up for Premium Membership (a $10 USD monthly subscription), which lets them submit graded coursework, build an artist’s portfolio, and get a Certificate of Accomplishment upon successful completion of the course.
